Read what happened with the American economy before and after World War II.
It was the start of a US style "British Empire (which had owned many nations before it collapsed)" -- the US began its own empire by stealing the 13 colonies and then the rest of the nation through ugly attacks against native Americans from coast to coast. Slavery (which enriched many world nations through free labor) made America prosperous and able to acquire other nations during the 20th Century, i.e. Hawaii, the Phillipines, Guam and using local citizens for slave labor.
The US also started stealing the resources of many other nations, including in Africa, Central and South America through assasinatoins of leaders and genocide). After the Great Depression, the US began forcefully acquiring more wealth through secret actions and wars against even more nations and by WWII when other European nations were conveniently falling to Hitler, the US set up a powerful propaganda machine that would make it appear to be the Savior of the World. Americans sacrificed.
More recently, America needed more wealth. So Bush stole his first election and was way too clumsy to pull off the America as Savior deal, because he is hateful. He couldn't make "spreading democracy" believable this time because it was too illogical- world nations, even the brown ones, are too smart now.
His cabal decided that "scaring the public" would help further their plans to take the oil wealth (they are oil businessmen, remember.) "Evil Arabs attacked America, the world was told. Others think he allowed 9/11 to happen to make it appear America was attacked. Then laws could be abolished to invade the countries with the most oil. Constitutional rights and freedoms could be taken away-- just in case "the terrorists are on American soil'. Right.
The Bush cabal made "arabs" appear to be evil and deserving of "counterattack". American racists could hate them as much as they hated Native Americans when those lands were being stolen.
But Bush was so heavy handed that mothers of dead American soldiers (way before Cindy Sheehan) figured out Bush's greedy scheme and now everyone (except his brainwashed base) knows.
So Cheney kept up the ruse by raising the Codes to Red and Orange and covert operators bomb subways in other countries and CIAs create crazy schemes that US flights and building will be bombed by a bunch of college students all of the brainwashed minions and bigots can justiify being happy that millions will be killed because this scheme will not stop.
After the greedy neocons stole America's wealth, the economy is on the brink and the only way out is to kill. Meantime, the world now truly sees and hates the scheme of the Neocons in America.

I can think of several events in history that lead to this:
- Open opportunity for wealth building in America that causes immigrants moving to America from the European countries, thus increasing labor force availability and intellectual talents in the country
- Technological discovery during the early 20th century, such as: steam power, electricity, telegraph, automobile, automation, etc
- World War II. Even the Japanese forces at the time realized that America with all the industrial powers behind it would eventually turn around and win the war
- The discovery of nuclear technology during WWII
- The space race era
- The fall of Soviet Union

If you talk about militarially , I would say 1898 when we became internationally stronger although some would say imperialistically so. If you consider it in a land sense I would say after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. In an economic sense it would be the development of our industrial prowess during the Civil War and beyond with the great industrial barons of the late 19th and early 20th century. If you mean in an historical sense My opinion would be the stir that the Declaration of Independence stirred in the hearts of the colonials and the aftermath in France in 1789.But overall in the combination of it all the US became a world power with the atomic bomb from WW2.

America became asuper power because the other rival supr power SOVIET UNION disintegrated slowly and gradually ,as a result America was the only super power.
Soviet Union disintegrated becoz they saw through means of tv that the economic lifestyle of people of America was much better as compared to S.U. As a result they disintegrated.
the first three states to disintegrate were latvia, Estonia & Lithuania and the last 1 to disintegrate was Russia.

It was obvious that The United States was a major power by the end of the World War I. Following World War II, the U.S. was the only major nation whose industries were left unscathed by the war - and the U.S. had the atomic bomb. If you are the only country with an atomic bomb, you are a super power.

UK got sick of being one and called us in after WWI. The first time, we said no thanks. That is why even though McKinley helped start the predecessor to the UN, the US never joined. After WWII, the US said "OK, OK, we'll step up."
Don't you wish you'd left us isolationist?
