The reading of stories provide many benefits to young learners.

1. Stories introduce language (vocabulary) and the rhythm of language.

2. Stories provide a source of information about life, such as morals, history and cultural context.

3. Stories can demonstrate how conflict occurs and how it can be resolved.

4. Stories "package" information into understandable "chunks". Stories are structured with a beginning a middle and an end.

5. Fiction can open a whole new world to kids. I nurtures imagination (which Einstein believed to be more important that knowledge) which is needed in order to be a good learner.

I could go on and on but then I would just be another know it all middle school teacher.

Through listening to stories, children are being exposed to language. They absorb the structures and "rules" much as a baby absorbs essential body-building nutrients in its milk, i.e. naturally, enjoyably and without conscious effort. It is a precursor of reading independently and observant children, sharing a story-book with the reader, often notice phonic groups for themselves.
Of course they also learn language from the everyday speech they hear around them, but with stories, their language and as a consequence, their social horizon can be much wider.
