I was thinking of helping my friend who loves old hymns by scanning in songs from old hymn books and turning them into text files so he can do a word search on them.

But we do not know how long the copy rights last on these songs.
Can you help? Thanks.

copy rights end 70 years after the owners death. if the author did not pass them on, then there shouldn't be a problem with old hymns, but they may have passed it on to younger generations, then you'd need to wait 70 years after their death..
