All fish need filters so it is good that he finally has one just make sure the flow isn't too strong. If it is and you can't turn it down then place some plants in front of it to break it up that way he wouldn't need to swim so hard.
It's great that you got him a bigger tank too. Unlike what most people think they don't live in tiny little puddles, they actually live in big lakes. Here is a link to show what those rice paddies look like, http://www.bettadreams.com/ricepaddies.html

Here's an idea, I had the same thing.
I bought a Male beta put it in a little beta tank, then I went out and bought a 10gl tank with the filter, heater, rocks, etc.
Even added a few other fish....the other fish liked the beta food they'd swipe it from him, and they nipped at his fins...so, I got a breeders net and put it in the tank (Hangs on the inside of the tank) and thats where he is today...He's happy, he eats without his food being swiped from him...and he still shows off his beautifull fins.
BUT, you will have to clean the breaders net once a week because his left over food and poop has nowhere to go but to the bottom of the net....you can let the Beta swim around the tank with the others while you clean the net..use a Soft toothbrush(child size) and hot water..DON'T USE ANYTHING BUT HOT WATER!!! Scrub it, then put it back in the tank, put Beta back in.

Most likely he just needs to build up his muscles as he wasn't swimming as much before. Due to their fancy fins it's a lot of work to swim from one side to the other. He'll look like he is strungling, but he having the time f his life. He is likely just adjusting to his new home. One thing to keep in mind is he needs a place to rest, and get out of the current. Some fake plant or a cave/rock work great. You should be able to add non betta tanks mates. Avoid slow fish, and fish that look like betta. Platties, and cory cats might be a good start. Avoid fin nipper like tertas and barb.

Use a turkey baster to get rid of any debris on the backside of the tank, and a paper towel to wipe down the factors of the tank in the event that they seem grimy. Then take out 10% of the water and replace it with sparkling, dechlorinated, room temp water. in case you sparkling the tank suitable, as mentioned above, extremely than dumping out each and all of the water and rinsing each and all of the gravel, which destroys any sturdy micro organism equipped up interior the tank (sturdy micro organism facilitates shop the water of course extra ballanced) and the ask your self of latest water circumstances and temperature in lots of cases kills betta besides, it somewhat is why basically a % of the water would desire to get replaced. The frequency of those cleanings count on the dimensions of your tank, extremely. The smaller the tank, the extra in lots of cases it somewhat is going to need maintenance as poisonous ammonia will boost interior the water and finally make your betta ill, if not kill him. right that's a itemizing of tank sizes and wholesome/reccommended cleansing scheduals: 0.5 gallon tank or smaller: (it somewhat is extremely reccommended you get a larger tank except you have a heater interior the tank.) 10-20% water differences the different day a million-3 gallon tank: 10% water differences two times a week 5 gallon tank and up: 10% water differences as quickly as a week upload the different cleansing meathods as needed. without filter out you ought to use a internet to skim any debris from the ideal of the water. the biggest to a wholesome and happy betta extremely is a heater, and that they make warmers that are compatable with all length tanks, so please attempt to get a heater in case you have not have been given one :P sturdy luck including your betta!

I guess it really depends...I always thought that the best thing about Betas was that you DON'T need a big filtered tank for them. I would take him out of the tank and put him back in his nice little bowl, and if you're willing to spend some more money, maybe buy some aquarium fish for the tank, so it doesn't go to waste. (Keep in mind though that those fish are kind of expensive...)

maybe since your betta is swimming harder, the filter might be too strong for his little fish body.see if the filter is running too hard.

You can leave him there. Just make sure not to get another male as they will fight to the death. Females are ok. Other kinds of fish are ok too, just not too many.
