It shows a lack of professionalism, and could be construed as "cheeky" if issued in a professional context. However, in a casual conversation it is no more objectionable than any other abbreviation or slang.

Yes, unless the message came in by IM off a cell phone, where you have to push the button several times to get each letter, and it's all very slow. At that point, I think I would accept the abbreviation.

I read this twice. The way you layer longer story-related prose is admirable, and something I have much trouble with. You make it seem effortless, natural, but all of us who write know the opposite is true. I often measure the effectiveness of a piece by the number of TD's........Jealousy rears it's green head. Kudos to you, Mr Carney.

If someone sent that message to me, I wouldn't even know what they're trying to say! It would cause confusion and frustration at wasting my time trying to figure out why they put the abreviation for the state of Texas on my thank you note.

I think a thank you in any form is pretty nice to get - not everyone does that. Look at the glass as half full, rather than half empty.

Yes - Thanks is already abbreviated from Thank You. Is is that hard to type the extra 4 letters?
