the best firewalls on earth always depend on the people administrating them or users behind them and how well they can adapt to new technologies. up until recently, my fave has been Checkpoint and then we've found that the Cisco Pix can be just as amazing, if not more so. This is not to dispell some awesome scripting people i know who spend their free time updating their free BSD (unix) servers so as to be sure that newly exposed system holes will not be exploited.
overall, it depends on the firewall rules adminstrator and the internal users. one of the largest reasons for anyone getting into someone else's network is by having an insecure password, a user who shares passwords, or a firewall that hasn't had it's rules updated to cover newly uncovered holes.

There are a number of premium and free firewalls. There seems to be a consensus among security experts that the free Comodo Firewall provides the best protection. Here are some reviews:
1. PC Magazine "Comodo Personal Firewall is a kick-*** free firewall. It keeps hackers out and tricky unauthorized programs off the Internet. And it resists being terminated. It works as well as all but the best for-pay firewalls—and did I mention it's free?" "4.5 starts out of 5" (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1969207,00.asp)
2. TechWorld "Free firewalls outclass paid-for ones, test reveals. The only two products to achieve a rating of "excellent" turned out to be free-to-use software, the Comodo Personal Firewall v2.3, and the Jetico Personal Firewall v2.0 beta. They scored, respectively, 9,350 and 9,125 points out of a possible total of 9,625, leaving the nearest rivals some way behind." (http://www.arnnet.com.au/index.php/id;159719021;fp;8;fpid;0)

Comodo has a good one. They claim to have the only firewall that does not leak.
The only firewall that doesn't leak
Unfortunately, most firewalls leak. But Comodo's Firewall is unique in that it passes all known leak tests to ensure the integrity of data entering and exiting your system. Comodo has put firewall through all kinds of sophisticated tests to ensure its firewall powerful enough to ward off these attacks with default settings. No other firewall has had to work this hard. Take this test yourself.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:
