awol from basic training in the year 2000, picked up 12-30-06, immediate extradition pending, need information a.s.a.p.

You're not awol, anymore. Technically, you're a deserter. Check out the Manual for Courts-Martial for maximum punishment and what-not.

It's possible you can go to jail, but even worse you still owe the 8 year obligation. You should be placed on active duty to serve
out your time, probably you will just serve 4 or 5 years and get a bad discharge. Get a civilian lawyer that specializes in military law.

P.S. If you leave for greater than 1 month it makes you a deserter

I belive it depends on which branch you were in ! if it is the USN or USAF you should be discharged if you had good reason . if it is the US army or marines you will probaly spend the remainder of you service time in the brigg

Since we were not at war 6 years ago, it might not be very long. If they can show that you did it to get out of battle or hazardous duty, then they can tack on years.
