This should help - apparently it's ok to do this, unless you're intending to defraud someone.

If you're changing your name because you do intend to defraud someone, and if your spouse doesn't know you've changed your name, then it would possibly be a putative marriage, in which case your spouse would be entitled to everything as if the marriage were in fact legal.

I don't know aout England specifically, but how could it be legal anywhere to marry using a name that isn't legally yours?

well as you will have to show your birth certificate, or some other identity then the answer is proably No, unless you have your new name with a bank account, driving licence or other official document, it's to stop people getting married to several different people and commiting bigamy.

I think to make it binding all paperwork must be correct.
