There are many different opinions as to how often a tank needs to be cleaned. In general, the more often you clean your aquarium, the healthier your fish will be. In new aquariums (less than 3 months) I recommend a 1/3 to ½ water change every two weeks. As the aquarium becomes older a water change once a month should be sufficient.I do not recommend you take more than ½ of the water out at any one time.

I like to empty out around 10 gallons of my 40 gallon tank once a week, my filter is cleaned once a month and fresh carbon added.

You don;t need to do any more often than this unless you have a problem with your water.

However I have left the tank for well over 6 months before changing any water with all the fish remaining healthy - but the tank was over-filtered and pretty large housing only a few fish.

Change about 30% of it every week.

Clean your filter only in water from the tank (not tap water).

Only clean 1/2 of your filter each time (makes sure you don't wash away all the good bacteria).

If you don't live in a hard water area, occasionally add a bit of chalk (too acid water isn't good for the fish).

Top up with a mixture of rain water and tap water. Either add a water conditioner to it, or leave tap water in a bucket for a week to sit before adding it.

It all depends on your tank, filter, and your fish! If you have alot of fish in a small thank you may have to change once a week! Just make sure you dont 4get to put the dechlorinator chemical! I made this mistake twice already! If you have a big tank with a small amount af fish and a filter maybe once a month or 25% changes every week or so! If you have a big tank with a sponge filter! Good luck on cleaning every week!

Do you have testing kits? The most important ones for a mature tank are ammonia and nitrate. Your ammonia should always be at 0, and your nitrates shouldn't exceed 40ppm. I do water changes once a week, but if your waters are testing really clean after a week, you can let it go another week. Just keep testing!
