I was around some fake-tanned teenagers last night, and thought to myself that they will regret this action when they are in their 40's... There must be a link between the rise in skin cancer and these aborrhent machines- why are they still around?

There is no money in healthy people. More skin cancer equals income for doctors.

Some folks use them to treat certain skin conditions (such as psoriasis.) Also, some people can go in them and not have one problem ever. The problems start when light-skinned people who don't tan easily try to force it. You can usually tell these folks by that orangey cast they have to their skin. A person who tans well in the sun will turn brown and have no problems if done in moderation. I haven't ever had a problem when I've gone, but I used to go once a week for one month. I'm also half Native though, so I don't usually burn.

~The sun is still legal. My guess is that there is a great demand for them, and people still want to use them to get tans!~

Because people still want them - just like cigarettes.

Basic supply and demand.
