what you see on TV is just a small part of what Africa is
you are right most African countries are generally poor but very rich in natural resource
they are bullied into selling those resources for next to nothing by you know who anyway,
alot of African countries are developed and continue to do so
ask yourself how they're able to have a booming tourism industry
were do the 747's land if the countries are so backward?
the airports have huge runways and are up to standard you know!
they do meet international regulations
and where do all those feisty tourists stay while they are there, and when they decide to go back year after year
some of the most beautiful resorts and hotels are found in Africa
also, Africa is a continent!
so do some research,
go to Africa and see for yourself

Africa as a whole has advanced tremendously. There are internet cafes and cell phone usage is VERY common. This technology (internet alone) connects Africa to the rest of the world especially West Africa. I think that the media targets isolated places and still shows the abandoned families in war torn countries starving, but fails to look at countries where the community is enjoying modern life.
When I went to Nigeria for the first time in 2004, there were so many internet cafes where I saw plenty of young Africans surfing the net and chatting. Many of the people I visited had cell phones (it actually makes more sense to have that rather than a LAN line). And in certain areas of Nigeria, there were gated communities of homes that were has similiar architechture as the homes I see in my area (VERY nice!)
There are many business opportunities, especially in West Africa, that people are taking advantage of. Yet the positive advancement is hardly the focus in the media.

There are many reasons, of course, but here are a few key ones:
- Most of the countries in Africa were literally made up by Europe: the borders make no sense, and there's a lot of ethnic conflict
- When the Europeans left Africa, they passed on their power to a select group of African elites who run the countries in the same self-serving ways
- A mixture of the worst pre-colonial values and the worst colonial values has left women's rights in ruins, which drags down the whole society
I highly recommend the Caplan article, below...

Africa is a continent, not a country.
Also, colonization destroyed the livelihood of many people all around the world. It seems to me that most of the problems are in former British and French colonies.

Because they are held down as a people. The land is raped by people outside of their race. Haven't you ever heard of apartheid?? The MINORITY (whites) were the ones in charge, and this was just 20 years ago. It is disgusting.
Blacks are always always always mistreated, even in their own countries.
