Legally would be buddy spy: http://www.buddy-spy.com/
Since Yahoo keeps updating their messenger don't expect it to work every time.
The other part with seeing who they are speaking with, viewing their webcam without permission and so on it's illegal!

Nuotex BuddyCheck
Are your Yahoo! Messenger friends hiding from you? Not any more! With BuddyCheck you can see if they are online even if they set their status to invisible.

Just add your friends to the contact list and their online status will be regularly checked. You will be notified when one of them really signs on of off.

Download the 10 day trial version or purchase BuddyCheck now for only $19.95.

Warning
Starting from 10 August 2006, due to Yahoo! Messenger server changes, BuddyCheck is unable to detect invisible users as easy as in the past. Now it can only detect invisible users which are added as a friend to the contact list of the account used by BuddyCheck.

This means that you'll have to add the friends you want to check to the account used by BuddyCheck and they must accept your invitation. This could blow your cover.

As an alternative, you could login with you main account for a short period to check for invisible users. You will be logged out of Yahoo! Messenger while you do this since only one application can be logged in into a specific account at the same time. If you receive a message during this time, it will be lost since BuddyCheck can't show it.

ok, I am confused. If someone is avoiding you and sets their status to invisible why in the heck would you pay $20 to see if they are really online? They obviously dont want to talk to you or they wouldn't be invisible! This almost seems like twisted stalking, eh?
