Many 18th century literary works (even some quite long novels) were in the form of a series of letters between the characters known as the "epistolary novel". Such was the original format of Jane Austen's famous novel "Pride and Prejudice", as written between 1796-1797, under the original title "First Impressions". It was published 16 years later, in 1813, under the title and in the form which you are most familiar as "Pride and Prejudice".
