It depends on what you are looking for and the budget you have.
If you want to be close to all the 'main attractions' (Buckingham Palace, South Bank, Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge. The Tower of London, etc.) Travelodge, Covent Garden, is right at the centre of things and is clean and reasonable. You can sometimes get some good offers from the Travelodge website if you can book a little in advance.
Lastminute.com also has some great offers on more 'upmarket' London hotels. Look at the section on 'Top Secret' hotels where you can get 70 per cent off the price of a room.
Enjoy your stay.

Where in central London? It's a big place. Here's two, but why not google it? Westminster Cathedral in Victoria. Brompton Oratory in Knightsbridge.

Depends on what you want to be near/your budget.
City of Westminster - more expensive but near the sights
Kensington & Chelsea - the only affordable places here are B&Bs, handy for museums and shopping
Southwark/Lambeth - still quite central near to South Bank tourist area, but better value
Camden/Islington/Hackney/Tower Hamlets - getting more away from the tourist spots but much cheaper
Personally I would go for Southwark/Lambeth near the South Bank as the hotels are new but good value and there is lots to do nearby.

I stayed in Kensington. I loved it. You're right next to Hyde Park and there's a large shopping district in Kensington and I felt safe. The hotel was call the Thistle Kensington Palace.
