I'd try www.morgancomputers.co.uk - end of line, and some reconditioned stock. They've been trading for years, at least 20, have a decent showroom on New Oxford street in London, and are great for stuff that has just been superceded in spec etc, ie, some decent laptops that might only be 6 months old. you should be able to get something decent there, all guaranteed. I'd avoid the cheapest offer from people like PC World as you'll probably get a machine without enough RAM in it.
Something like this
http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=3794&CategoryID=11&SubCategoryID=222
seems to be pretty well specced for the money. Decent brand with a one year warranty. I'd also say your request for the built in webcam is probably unlikely at that price, but you never know!
The other thing I'd do is to buy Personal Computer World magazine, as they have hundreds of ads in so you might get a better idea.

Your son should save more money and buy NEW.
But if you do buy a used one, here is what you MUST have.
1. Restore disk, so you can REINSTALL WINDOWS.
2. CD Burner, so you can make backups
3. All USB ports WORK, bring a THUMB drive and try them all.
4. 512MB of RAM, and less will be too slow.
5. Microsoft Office, your son will need Word and other applications for doing his homework.
Actually, a laptop is a total waste of money for a child. A new laptop might last 5 years. A 3 year old one will have 2 years left. Kids WILL break their laptop, so that is when the crying begins.
You should guide your son into buying a nice new desktop. They are cheaper, and cheaper to upgrade, and won't be DROPPED by the child.
Yes, it's his money, but losing it on something useless is not a good lesson to learn.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

A lot of want for a little money but Dell have some good deals at the moment - http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=uk
After months scouring the net I found a cheaper deal advertised in the paper one day so keep an eye on the offers. I found the service at PCWorld seriously bad! Will only spend time with you if you say you're gonna buy right now then tell you you need the top spec.

Any laptop available will do most what your son needs it to do. To have a camera built in is probably asking to much as they are usually only found in the top end laptops. Try buying a seperate webcam, you can get those for about £15. Best bet is to search with google to find the best deal.

Prices (as is always the case) for laptops have dropped, and will continue to drop as new technology replaces the old. Ive found a few good laptops for £350.
The first is a Dell:
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=N4XESS01&l=en&oc=N01135&rbc=N01135&s=dhs&sbc=ukdhsftdppnotebook1
The second one is just over £350 at £379.99 from PC World:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0715943379.1167665174@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfhaddjkjihlglcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=488559&category_oid=-27751
Here's one from Comet, again £379.99:
http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=363243
Lastly, one from Dixons at £350:
http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0964280875.1167665439@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccchaddjkjfdhfgcflgceggdhhmdfjg.0&page=Product&fm=3&sm=0&tm=0&sku=389383&category_oid=-28733
Hope that helps. If I was to buy one of them it would probably be the Dell or the Comet laptop.

i just bought one from dell. its the inspiron 1300, its brilliant, does all that you want it to do. go on the dell website, www.dell.co.uk
dont forget to remove the one year collect and repair service (just mantain the 3 month collect and repair service), else the price will increase to 415 or something like that. it will cost you 349, and they delivered in one week, given i ordered on the friday before christmas, it was delivered on the 29th. it doesnt have a camera, but they are really cheap, you can pick one up for under a tenner.
