The stingray was under Steve as he was swimming. The barb at the end of the stingrays tail pierced Steve in the heart. If Steve had not reacted and taken the barb out he could possibly have survived, however by removing it he bled to death. The barb was acting as a "plunger" so to speak and keeping the blood in.
He was a great spokesperson for the animal world and he will be greatly missed...crikey!!!!

The Story:

Steve Irwin was being filmed in Australia for a documentary. there was a stingray, and he swam over it, probably too close. Something bizzare (ana unnatural for stingrays) happened. It got scared and quickly thrased its tail upward -- right into Steve's chest, and into his heart. Mr. Irwin acted quickly, pulled the barb out, and was helped onto the boat. He probably shouldn't have pulled it out, because he bled (obviously). By the time the life flight got to the reef, Steve was dead.
It is most likely true that, if the barb had struck him lower, he would have probably lived.

As usual, Irwin was too close to the wildlife he was filming. The stingray reacted in its normal defensive manner. Most people stung by rays are hit on the leg below the knee after they step on the ray. This will give you some idea how close he was to the stingray.

yeah i think that the stingray just left steve irwin loved animals i doubt his crew would just kill the stingray and even if they tried to catch it after he passed away there would be millions to chose from.

a stingrays only defense is its stinger that is halfway down its tail. it has reverse barbs on it and it pulls out of the stingray when they stingray hits something with it I believe that he killed himself by pulling a stinger out of his chest. It seems like the news said that a MD Pro said if he had left it in, they might had had a chance to save him?

The sting penetrated his chest, probably as he swam over and startled it.
