As you might know if you're a history buff like me, there was supposed to have been a huge prairie province called "Buffalo" on the Canadian prairies.

Alas, the federal government panicked over the potential power of such a large province and cravenly decided to create two smaller provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

My question is this: should citizens reverse the foolishness of venal politicians and hold plebiscites in Alberta and Saskatchewan for a possible re-merger of thiese two provinces?

NO NO NO!!!

As person who grew up in Alberta, but has lived in Saskatchewan for the last 5 yrs, I feel qualified to answer this question.

I wouldnt want it. The main reason is I dont like the conservavtive-overly capitalistic-privatized-money machine Alberta has become. Im glad to have left it behind.

I love Saskatchewan and our NDP government. They are doing a great job at balancing things....we have lots of jobs, a growing economy, affordable housing, a good quality of life, and decent social funding

No, Im sorry these two provinces have complete opposite political agendas. Sask's current NDP gov't has been in place for 15 yrs....and Alberta...well thats where Harper hails from...need I say more?

It would have been a hell of a big province

Before 1905 - Alberta and Saskatchewan were part of the Northwest Territories and consideration was given to making it one large province entitled "Buffalo"

1905 - It was decided that one large province would become too powerful in Confederation, so the government decided to draw a line splitting the population and land mass almost right down the middle.

1905 -1947- created to be equal , the two provinces shared similar growth rates in economics and population.

1947 - Oil is found in Leduc, just south of Edmonton - Alberta starts to pull ahead of Saskatchewan.

2000 - Alberta's population is triple that of Saskatchewan and its economy is stronger than every other jurisdiction in the country.

2005 - Alberta & Saskatchewan share their 100th birthday
The "Twin Provinces" are united through the Centennial Mural, "Buffalo Twins"

Thanks for the question, I learned something today.

Not a bad idea and while it has historical relevance, I think few people even know about that obscure bit of history and even fewer really care. It would be a hard sell to Albertans who would shrink at sharing their oil money and it would be a hard sell to Saskatchewaners who have carved out their own identity and while being very pleasant and polite are not exactly known for being pushovers.
