Not usually.

If a person is a cross dresser for a stage act and just do it as a costume for money, of course they can.

If a person is a cross dresser because they psychologically feel more comfortable in the clothes of the other gender, or because they get a thrill from it, this is a fettish or some other type of mental illness and it's no more in their power to just stop then it is in the power of a schizophrenic to stop acting schizophrenic.

There is more and more scientific evidence that crossdressing is something that one is BORN with. That being said, it is not something that can be ignored or gotten rid of. The biggest problem the typical crossdresser has is the population's misconceptions about what a crossdresser actually is. Most (90% by most surveys) are completely heterosexual and have no desire to be anything else. A terribly under-educated public erroneously associates crossdressing with homosexuality, perversion, and transsexualism primarily due to negative 'press' from the media sources. Unfortunately, very little research is devoted to crossdressing since it isn't defined as a disease or mental illness by the professional communities so the chances of any type of mass education and general acceptance or understanding in the foreseeable future are very slim.

So as an answer to the question - It may be possible for a person to stop the PHYSICAL act of crossdressing for a while, but the desire to do so and the mental need will always be with the person. Denying and supressing the need can easiliy lead to health problems, both physical as well as mental, which can be much more serious than simply accepting the fact that one is a crossdresser and administering to the need to do so.

I suppose trying to stop crossdressing is a bit like trying to quit smoking. For some it is an addiction. Yes they may stop for a while but then that urge creeps back and you have to give in. For others it is just a phase they are going through and get fed up with it or outgrow it after a time. Im a cross dresser myself, I have no intention of stopping as my partner and I enjoy my dressing. Perhaps the day will come when I will lay my female persona to rest but i cant see that being anytime soon.

Not at all. Most will purge and steer away from crossdressing for a while, but they eventually go back to it. It is like asking a pianist not to play a piano.

Crossdressing is ingrained into your psyche and contrary to what may think, there is nothing wrong with it. Even the DSM-IV states that there is nothing wrong with Crossdressing unless it consumes every aspect of normal living.

Do not be ashamed of Crossdressing or try to stop it. Just enjoy it.

No and really if they are a crossdresser why would you want to stop. It is better to cope with some of the problems that sometimes arise from it, but the urge will never go away.

why not? They once decided to try it, and after awhile could possibly be bored of it and never do it gain....sometimes it is just a "phase" you go through, and sometimes you enjoy it so much, you want to crossdress all the time.

You will answer that yourself soon after you have replaced
your wardrobe a few times.
Try hiding your fem things out in the garage for awhile.
When you start having those special feelings again they
will come in handy.

No once you start you cannot stop. a lot of cross dressers try and they binge ( throw everything away) and then end up buying new all over again.

Generally speaking? No. The need to dress en femme is usually very ingrained, and the need to express oneself is very strong.
