Are coins self sterilizing?

Yes, the copper-nickel alloy is self-sterilizing. But butt-pennies, which are pure copper, are not. You have to watch out for them.

Coins may provide a less friendly environment for germs and viruses to survive than other materials. However due to the poor hygiene of many people, especially after using rest rooms, coins and bills may be contaminated with fecal matter. It is still wise to wash hands before meals, especially if coins have been handled.

Just think in the 1800's when wagon trains would come to the west their water was contained in barrels. In the barrels they put silver dollars to keep water from growing algae or any other bit of nastiness. Yes they can some alloys better then others. Still doesn't mean you should put them in your mouth though.
