Most everyone with a scientific background knows of antimatter. All of the basic antiparticles; positrons, antiprotons, antineutrinos, etc.; have eiher been observed in nature or created in the lab.
As for many fictional portrayals of "antimatter beings" invading Earth, such a thing is simply not possible. When antimatter comes into contact with matter, it "evaporates", along with an equal quantity of the normal matter in contact with it, into very high energy gamma rays.

The common person is not aware of any details of antimatter. Antimatter is real and it does exist. However, antimatter is impossible to contain within regular matter because it will interact with regular matter and annihailate both types of matter. Scientist have created it in the lab. Only very small amounts have been observed and they only last for a short time. Tekkies will be aware that it is the fuel for the ship, but they may not know the details. Antiparticles are identical to everyday matter particles(electrons, protons) but have the exact opposite charge.

I am not very well versed in this field, but I have read that a lot if not all of the scientific things we see on Star Trek and in sci-fi movies or sci-fi in general are/is derived from science that our and other government have already or are in the process of deriving or discovered already. I know that I have heard of antimatter on Star Trek, and I know that I had read something about the development of some sort of antimatter, but I did not have any idea just how far it had advanced. I also read something quite a few years back in Popular Science about the US government having already built a Ion propulsion system, but have not or at the time I read this had not been able to successfully test it, due to it putting off too much hard core radiation. It would poison the atmosphere.

No, Because it does not exist in free nature. The amount produced at one given time lasted nanosecounds

I think a lot of people think its all science fiction but its not.
They have indeed made anti-particles including I believe anti-hydrogen - which is one antiproton orbited by one positron.
Don't believe everything you read in Dan Brown books though. He's not as scientifically literate as he likes to think.
