What causes certain photographs to make eyes look red? There must be something the film picks up that we don't see. For instance, when I took pictures of my kids, my oldest son's picture had red eye. My younger son, who wears glasses did not. I suspect the reflection of light on the glasses eliminated the red eye, but I would like to know why it occurs in the first place.

red eye is the result of the light from the flash reflecting off of the retina at the back of the eye and then into the lens of the camera. everyone's eyes are really red like that, but usually there is not enough reflected light to make it visible. The light from the flash is in and back out of the eye before the iris can contract. with many cameras there is a 'anti' red eye function that flashes in a burst that is designed to give the iris of the eye time to contract and thus preventing red eye from occuring in the final photos. Cats, raccoons, and some other animals w/very good night vision don't refect as red, but as yellow/green instead, because of another layer behind the retina that reflects in other colors.

The retina of the eye is filled with red blood vessels. Sometimes light enters the eye and mainly red light is reflected out and caught on film. Because the subject is looking directly at the camera there is a greater chance than usual that the subject will photograph with red eyes. Because eyes are constantly moving it is hard to see another person's red eyes, especially because you do not ordinarily point a strong light source at them (unless taking a photo). At night, it is sometimes possible to see the red eyes of animals when you point a strong flashlight (or headlights?) at them. Of course this might annoy a huge predator.

The reason we get red eye is the light being reflected off the retina at the back of the eye. You find that it occurs more in people with light eys due to the fact they have less muscle tissue in the iris so the pupil is not able to close as quickly. This lets more light in and some light back out.
