I am looking for classes (not NCT as they don't run any at the right time!) which involve mediation and breathing exercises, possibly some type of self-hypnosis. Giving birth in May and would welcome any sensible comments
Thanks x

Whatever the relaxation/breathing techniques you choose, I think the key is to practice daily and apply it to your normal day, keep bringing yourself back to a calm relaxed state while driving, talking to someone, answering the phone, getting the shopping etc.

Make the birth as real to yourself now as you can, and visualise as many different circumstances and outcomes as you can, and mentally prepare for each, with contingency plans also.

Don't carry a fixed idea of how things will go in your head - you never know how things will turn out on the day, and the last thing you should feel is disappointed. Make loose plans, but be willing to adapt them should you need to.

If you practice relaxation enough, you can induce a state of self-hypnosis, but it takes many hours over many weeks. Now is a perfect time to start.

Having said all that, don't carry too many notions in your head about the spiritual side of birthing - you will never do anything more physical in your life! You need to prepare mentally for that, and no matter how physically fit you are, you will still find it hard work.

Best of luck in May, and I hope the rest of the pregnancy goes well.

There are many trained hypnobirthing teachers in the UK www.hypnobirthing.com/united_kingdom.htm who can teach you techniques for a more comfortable birth. However, I think they tend to do sessions just with one couple rather than classes.

Or if you are interested in yoga based classes, try the Active Birth Centre. The actual centre is in London, but there are many trained teachers around the country who run yoga classes that are specifically designed to get you ready for the birth and show you positions that you can use during labour.

Hypnobirthing is supposed to be good and allows you to birth without the need for drugs.

I considered this but it was just too expensive. As it turned out my labour was so quick and I did it without pain relief anyway (although it did hurt!)

This site has all you need to know and details of your nearest classes in your area of the UK:

I don't live in the UK or know where you can take the classes but what you are looking for is called hypnobirthing. Look it up online. I plan to use it with my next child.

Ask your midwife. Some yoga teachers also run special classes for pregnant women.
