Hi, Never had a laptop before, thinking of getting one at the mo, I would say my budget is around 600 quid at the most, It will be a games machine, I dont need the latest garphics card but definitely need one that can run all games for the next few years or so. Just wondering if anyone had any advice on a laptop, where is best to get them from (interest free credit is a bonus). and anything else you think I may have to look out for.
Also, is there a possibility that I may have to wait until Vista is up and running, as XP may be rendering any current laptops obsolete before I even look at them?!

thanks for any advice

See http://www.ebuyer.com. They have excellent deals and if you spend a further £50 to upgrade the memory, you're laughing.

Bought HP laptop from ebuyer.com in November, cost £450 inc VAT, extra memory and free delivery,. Arrived next day. Fantastic, also for game playing.

edit - who are these jerks who give you a thumbs down for a perfectly acceptable response, with accurate information based on personal experience? Weird or what.

With a laptop it is not usualy posible to upgrade the graphics card so I would suggest getting the best graphics you can afford. Memory is usually the only upgrade you can get. For £600 you are unlikely to be able to get a proper gaming laptop.

As to XP/vista XP is ging to be supported for quite a while and a lot of places are now offering a free upgrade to vista when it comes out at the end of Jan/beginning feb.

Take a look at dell or the websites of electrical shops. Sometimes also going in to a shop you may find a deal on.

I would advise against getting a laptop if you are interested in a gamming machine that will run most games for the next few years. A desktop computer will be more likely to run the games for a longer period of time. Also if there is a change in video card requirements it will allow you to just upgrade the video card without having to spend a lot more money for a new system.

Big heavy laptops can replace the desktop computer function in many cases, but are definitely not practically portable. The batteries soon wear out and your stuck anchored to the AC wall outlet anyways. Likewise you lose all that convenient access to a larger desktop chassis which you can plug lots of special gaming hardware into. So in your case, picture a nice 17 or 19 inch LCD monitor on your desktop. Then later when you really need portability for a legitimate reason, buy a laptop that weighs less than 5.5 pounds and uses less than 30 watts in its full operating mode.

to run games you will need a graphics card as even an indecent amount of RAM will not hold a light to an average graphics card. As for the laptop i would recommend you buy an extra battery of a larger capacity.

Oh and don't buy apple, with the same specification as mine(120gb hardrive/ 1gb Ram all for £610) the equivilant apple would have cost £1000

Only advice I can offer is don't get a laptop.
For 600 you will find it very hard to get a games machine is that is even slightly future proof.
My laptop cost about what your playing and can't even handle the 1st Halo game. If you only want RPGs then there will be no worries, but FPS and RTSGs will be hard to run
