first there were bulletin boards

then there were news groups (basically threaded email)

chat rooms are basically real time news groups although they use a different protocol - IRC instead of NNTP

its all about communicating with other people

it all started with a thing called "prodigy". I wasn't the inventor but I was one of the first several hundred users. My dad had a tandy computer. It was a lot of fun and the graphics were crappy. TWO colors, blue and yellow, for the whole screen.

Evertything else was pretty much the same though. Scrolling chatrooms. There were only a couple of rooms though and most people knew each other from earlier chats. It's weird that we feel a need to chat on the pc at all!
