The response you've received from kevin ? gent is absolutely correct.
The unformatted capacity of a DSHD (double-sided, high density) floppy disk is 1.44 MB. The formatted capacity of a DSHD floppy disk is 1.38MB. (Many years ago, there used to be DSDD (double-sided, double density) floppy disks, and, before that, SSDD (single-sided, double density) floppy disks ... and even further back 5.25" floppy disks, that really were floppy. lol.)
There are extended formatters available, which allow you to format your floppy disks to a higher capacity, but it means that you'd have to install the program before reading your floppy disks.

....and this is a problem? Space is needed to manage the floppy diskette's directory.
When you e-mail files, you learn that the maximum file that can be e-mailed is 10MB. But when you e-mail a file, it GROWS by 30%, which means that you can't e-mail a file that is really 10MB.

Throw your floppies away - spend £15 and get a 512Mb USB disk.(capacity of around 400 floppies). Even your old laptop should have a USB slot.

Look at your hard drive, it will be the same!
F.A.T. file allocation table, takes a bit of space!
Why are you still using floppies, they are so dead now!
Buy a USB stick, it will hold ALL the information you have on ALL your floppies!
