My housemate thought he was being helpful by using disinfectant to clean the kettle. (which, by the way, is still filthy). This was a few weeks ago, and the smell of the disinfectant is still really strong - plus, whenever I make a cup of tea or coffee, the taste of the disinfectant is overpowering and it is horrible. Any ideas on how to get rid of the smell and taste?

Try malt vinegar, fill the kettle 1/4 full, add 5 tablespoons vinegar and switch on to boil do this with lid of kettle up so that you can see the froth rising and switch kettle off before it boils over. Empty the kettle afterwards, rinse out with clean water and then fill with clean water, boil this and empty the kettle again. This should work the first time, if not repeat the process once more. IMPORTANT: NEVER LEAVE THE KETTLE BOILING UNATTENDED WITH VINEGAR IN as the foam overflows. Vinegar is the best descaler and is safer than commercial chemicals. Hope this helps, good luck!

Boil pure white vinegar in it for a few minutes. This will also help clean it. Boil the vinegar 3 or 4 times, letting in cool and sit between boiling.Letting it sit overnight is best. Then boil half vinegar half water, agian a few times. Work your way to just plain water. This should not only do a fanatstic job of cleaning it, but should get the smell out as well. Good Luck!

Try boiling up the kettle with white vinegar and or lemon juice. The acid in both will clean it nicely and should take the smell away. Remember after to boil plain water a couple of times !!!

hmm, should have used one part vinegar to a kettle full of water and boiled it .. (but keep an eye on it as you need to turn the kettle off before it overflows - the vinegar does this)
you may want to try the vinegar to clean any residue left from the disinfectant or just leave 1 part vinegar to the water overnight

few options...

buy a new 1, lol

boil it with 2 parts white vinegar/lemon juice and 3 parts water

add water to some bicarbonated soda to make a paste, leave on inside of kettle for about an hour then wash off

Personally if I wasn't going to bu a new 1, I'd do the bicarb thing, then boil it with water and vinegar/lemon juice.

Never, never wash a kettle. kettles were meant to be filthy. That's the main way that people develop immunity to horrible diseases. If you was your kettle, you will die!
