It has long been known that currency gets around quite a bit, and with it, germs. Recently though a physicist from the Max-Planck-Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (link below), has used data from the popular US site www.wheresgeorge.com to track how epidemics would spread.

That being said, though eliminating physical currency (be it paper or coin) would definitely cut off one means of spreading infections and diseases, the general habits of the public at large would likely provide sufficient means of transfer, that the effect would not be noticeable. Habits I refer to would include not washing one's hands after using the latrine, touching common objects such as a cashier's pen or door knobs, and not properly covering one's mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Many new products are being developed to help prevent the spread of diseases. New metal alloys and paints, for instance, are being developed that can kill bacteria either on contact or when exposed to certain types of light. A story about a self cleaning bathroom that uses these materials can be found on Popular Science's website below. I believe that these concepts will eventually be used in the dyes and inks used to make money and clothing, thus not only solving the issue of money spreading germs, but going the extra mile to use currency itself as a tool in the war against the common cold.

Here in Canada we're well on on way to getting rid of paper money. We have $1 and $2 coins and the National Mint is developing a $5 coin. This would help eliminate germs etc, but the coins are a little cumbersome to carry in a wallet.

If the world got rid of ALL money, I believe there would be tremendous benefit, possibly in reducing the spread of germs, but also in many positive ways we rarely even imagine.

It would not help those things at all.

It would be chaos, anarchy, etc etc etc. for a while, but once people started trusting each other more, and becoming more generous, a TOTAL LACK OF CURRENCY would benefit society as a whole in every way possible.

Will it happen? Most likely not. Should it happen? Absolutely.

You're welcome.

If that will happen, it would surely affect the economy of every country. And surely it would be replaced if that will happen.

But i'm positive they won't be using coins that are heavy.
