I just discovered his music, and I am surprised he's not talked about like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations etc, think he was the best ever. maybe its because I dont live in America that I had never heard of him

Yes, he's underrated. He died in 1964 and had alot of competition during his career. Elvis, The Beach Boys etc. His death in a motel was the biggest story of his career. It was rumored his wife shot him to death because he was there with another woman but I don't think it was ever proven.

That's a good question. He did have a ton of hits. He didn't have too many "party" singles. Let's be honest though, The Temptations were the hottest thing around during that era. Also, I think part of his lack of popularity has to do with his death. He was killed by a hotel manager who says Cooke threatened her and she shot him in self-defense.
