The last Democratic President of the United States who was a "great" President was definitely Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He reluctantly took us into World War II, because he could see that the Nazis under Adolph Hitler, were about to attack the United States. Great Britain and France were loosing that war. Germany was bombing England, and had already taken over France.
It was the United States' entry into WWII that caused the war to be won on behalf of the Allies. It catapulted the US into the position of being the World Super Power.

This is tough because in retrospect now you see all the good and bad, but I would have to say that the best Dem Pres were FDR, Johnson and Clinton. Johnson is very often over looked in favor of JFK, But he did more for this country then JFK did. Clinton past more legislation then anyone since FDR and We were doing good as a country and personally while he was in office. FDR pulled us out of the depression and led us through war. But did they miss and over look things Absolutely. But Ill take a Dem over a Rep any day still

Good question....I would have to say ....FDR? Let's see..Clinton failed to fight terrorism and got impeached, Carter was....ummm...Carter, LBJ fought a hugely expensive war on Poverty(and we are still losing THAT), he fought a noble war quite stupidly in Vietnam, but he did sign the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Kennedy was pretty, but there was also the Cuban Missile Crisis, The Bay of Pigs, and his sending of troops to Vietnam. Truman...made the choice to drop the atomic bombs, sent us to war in Korea (without congressional approval), ignored Soviet spies in his administration, FDR was brilliant during WW2, but caused the Depression to last way too long, increased our government by leaps and bound, ignored Soviet spies in his administration (including no.3 vice President Henry Wallace) (had the first female Cabinet member though), Wilson was a racist and bumbled us into WW1, then embarrassed us with his "14 demands", helped form the comically useless League of Nations. Hmmm I'd guess FDR, simply for his leadership in WW2.

It's a tie between Clinton and Carter, both of whom sought peace initiatives with other nations instead of George W. Bush's being hell-bent on destroying the world.
Carter actually gave up his run for re-election as he devoted all of his time and energy to freeing the 444 hostages in Iran. Then, Reagan made a secret, under-handed IranContra deal to upstage Carter and took all the credit for the hostages' release.
Clinton left the country with a budget surplus, instead of plunging American taxpayers into trillions of dollars worth of debt as George W. Bush has done...a debt so massive that Americans may never recover from it. -RKO-

William Jefferson Clinton. Booming economy, kept us out of war, left office with a budget surplus after inheriting a deficit (ok, Clinton didn't do that, but the people he had working for him were fiscally responsible), peace and prosperity. And it was all blown by the fool that followed him.

Kennedy was OK, but Clinton will be remembered as one of the greatest presidents of the twentieth century because he managed to get the economy going and simultaneously got the country out of debt.
Comparing his administration to the catastrophic republican administrations of the twenty century is like an exercise in despair.

Bill Clinton had great charisma, but lacked in other areas. Jimmy Carter wasn't considered a great president until he was an ex-president. Kennedy was the most beloved, but he lied, stealed , and cheated his way into office. Historically, it would have to be JFK.

Kennedy, he had the economy under control, he faced down the Cubans/Russians, and he made you feel proud to be an American.
