Sadly, because they're ignorant and insecure. My dear friend cannot walk down the street and hold his partner's hand for fear of punishment of some sort. They've been together for 18 years, and they don't feel they can openly express affection for each other. How sad that people are so ignorant and cruel to others. I actually almost (almost) feel sorry for homophobics because there's something very, very wrong with them.

I'm sure that your last sentence was taking things to the extreme. As far as your first sentence, I don't think that the heterosexual lifestyle is pushed onto anyone with the exception of heterosexual parents raising children or the teachings in church. Doing what comes naturally to people may be offensive to others who are not comfortable with who they are, as with the case of males who become homosexuals for lack of confidence with women for one reason or another. I'm a heterosexual male and I don't give it a second thought about if what i'm doing is okay. For me, being heterosexual is something that just comes naturally and have been disliked by many homosexual men for that. And yes, homosexuals do push their lifestyle onto others. For example, almost every state in America holds "gay festivals" or "gay parades" once a year. Have you ever heard of a "straight festival?" In my opinion, and I may be straying away from the subject, but those festivals actually give homosexuals a bad reputation. Define homosexuality? To me, to define homosexuality is to define heterosexuality. You are who you are and that's that! There's no need to parade up and down the street in "heterosexual clothing." Why do so many so-called "normal" homosexuals attend those things? Is that what homosexuality is about? Prancing up and down the street half naked dressing as the opposite sex? To be honest with you, I don't dislike all homosexuals. I dislike a lot of them, but not all. But these that I dislike is because they are not natural with who they are.

Most of the answers you're getting are great, except, of course, those idiot Bible beaters who have no clue about the origins of their own religion, let alone what God really thinks. The only thing I can add is that they did a study at the University of Wisconsin recently, where they took a group of young men who expressed tolerance toward gays, and a same size group of male homophobes, and ran them through a test. A sensor was attached to the participants penis, with the purpose of gaging any erection the participant may have (hope I'm not offending anyone here. If I am, I am honestly sorry). They were then asked to watch a gay porn movie. The test results showed conclusively that the tolerant participants showed no sexual arousal from watching the gay porn, while the vast majority of the homophobes were decisively aroused by it. I think this speaks volumes!

What else can they possibly say?
If you ask them HOW homosexuals push their lifestyle, you may even notice smoke coming out from their hears, because that chapter hasn't been written, yet.

I think that heterosexuals who dislike homosexuals do not like heterosexuals too. They only like themselves! no other person.

I don't know how things work where you live but in Scandinavia, homosexuality is widely accepted. Homosexual politicians, managing directors, actors etc. openly admit to being gay. One minister even took his husband to the queen's galla dinner.
However, we do have gay pride parades where homosexuals flaunt their sexuality in a very provocative manner. I think this is what most people refer to when they say that they don't like having homosexuality pushed on them.

Sadly, intolerance against gays is still widespread. In particular, conservative men from the southern United States show strong homophobic tendencies.

As a minor part of the population, non-hets have a reputation of being outspoken; to compensate for the fact that we live in a hetero-centric world. We rock "the norm" - so the hets (who are comfortable in their hetero-centrism) feel aggrieved.

The one who yells the loudest about the "homosexual agenda" hears the loudest echo in the closet their in. If I jump up and down, yelling foaming at the mouth, and gay bash, do you think anyone will notice that my mustache doesn't match my cocktail dress an heals? ( Pun intended)
