Here are some definitions:investment: the act of investing; after doing your due diligence on what it is you want to invest in and comfortable with the information, you lay out money with the expectation of profit . Speculation: an investment that is very risky but could yield great profits. You invest in well known stocks, you speculate on oil futures contracts. Investment is actual deployment of your capital in a business. It may be based on a sound assessment of the Company's fundamentals or based purely on speculation.Speculation means a wild guess on the kind of earnings your investments can bring or the amount of loss you might avoid by taking out the money presently invested in a particular share, because you guess it is going to lose money. It is always wiser to rely on proper evaluations rather than to go by rumours and speculations. Many a fortune has been unnecessarily lost in this speculative trading.

I kinda disagree with the answers so far and would offer that the difference is the probability of a profitable return. What is speculation to one person is investment to another.

Investments are usually done after careful study. Things need not work as you plan but it is better than gambling.
Speculation is like shooting in the dark. It is pure gambling.
