I ususally use cold water, except on towels. But I am wondering if warm isn't better. I just don't know.

Definitely warm.
Light colors can even go in a hot wash they come out beautifully clean and you know you've killed all the germs especially those that accumulate on wet towels.
A hot wash won't ruin anything that you would normally put in the dryer.
If you are worried about colors that bleed, washing in a cold wash sets the color and then you can wash it on a higher temp. and it won't bleed majorly.
When you wash on warm you should wash the dark stuff separately from the light stuff (not only whites).

hot for whites, cold for colors that bleed, like red and warm for all the rest.
