Passion often leads to joy or satisfaction. People are usually more in control of their passions - they can choose to act on them or not. Obsessions can rarely be satisfied; they are more often in control of the person rather than the person being in control of them. There is more likely to be an anxiety associated with an obsession.

Passion is a strong desire be it love or hate. Obsession is to be totally preoccupied with someone, something or just a thought.
