Check out "Termeraire" Or "His Majesty's Dragon" if you live in the States by Naomi Novik. It's a historical drama set in the Napoleonic Wars but with the twist that dragons are real. It's very well written and the imagery is fantastic. Also there are rumours that the movie rights are being negotiated so if you want a head start on what could be a great movie in a few years I'd check it out.

if you liked the classic draclua by bram stoker, then you will enjoy the Historian by Elizabeth Kostova it brings draclua back from the dead and into a modern classic. on a lighter note K-pax (yes its not a 2006 book but its got a good tale) is good. or if you are looking for a laugh then the yes man from danny wallace is so funny, just think `what would happen if ypu had to say yes all the time`. good luck with the book hunt as there are so many to pick

Now for a book for women I would suggest 'If Men Could Talk' it is a real eye opener to what men are really saying even with the few words that may come out of their mouths and one for men would be 'If Sex Could Talk'..because although men think they know it all between the sheets there is so much more they need to learn including what a woman may really be saying when the topic of sex comes up.Both books can be found on Amazon.com and are worth the few bucks you may put into ordering them.

If you want something classic and that has stood the test of time, read: 1984 by George Orwell, one of the best books from the 20th centuary.
If you want something written more recently: Orcs by Stan Nicholls is a great trilogy to read.
If you want something more easy going or light hearted I'd suggest: Any of the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett or Join Me and Yes Man both by Dannny Wallace.

My favorite of 2006 was a very sweet, kind of strange story about a very fat man who loses his parents, then finds out his only sister is dead after she had been missing for 30 years. It's called "The Memory of Running" by Ron MCLarty, and it is fantastic.

My all time favorites are The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger, and The Power and The Glory by Graham Greene. They are really amazing stories that will stay with you for a long time, so if you haven't read yet them I would highly recommend them!

my personal choice is any of Janet Evanovichs' books. There's a full series about a bounty hunter. They are good.
Also a book written by David Pelzer about his life growing up with an abusive, alcoholic mother. His brother Richard Pelzer also wrote a few books. A MUST READ

Any book written by Harumi Murakami.
After reading 'Kafka on the shore' I went on to read all of his novels. I particularly recommend:
- Kafka on the Shore
- Hard Bolied Wonderland and the end of the world
- The Wind-Up Bird Chronical
- A Wild Sheep Chase
If you haven't heard or read of any of his novels then I would start with 'Kafka on the Shore' as I did, if you love this, then you're bound to like the rest of his novels!
