I had the same problem with my HP, look at the cables on the back that connect for sound. Sometimes they are color coordinated however for some reason the colors do not match the correct outlet. Try changing them around and if that still fails go to your control panel in the start menu and configure your sound options and make sure everything is on the up and up.

Is digital CD audio turned on or off on your CD drive?
Open Device Manager and select CD/DVD drives; To open Device Manager, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager. right click your CD drive and select properties; On the Properties tab, select or clear the Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device check box. Click OK, and then restart your computer if you are prompted to do so.

go to control panel then sounds and check volume control,sometimes it switches off for no reason,if not that then check your sound card.
