You might be trying to download the professional version. AVG anti-virus' basic version is free. You can download that free of cost from http://free.grisoft.com/ . And you of course won't get spyware or firewall protection, because it is just an anti-virus. I guess you previously had the Norton Internet Security Suite, which provides all round protection. So if you are on the lookout for such a free security suite, AOL Security Center is the one for you. It is as good as Norton and is completely free. You only require a free AOL e-mail account in order to use it. Link: http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter
There is another free alternative to it, too. You can use AVG as your anti-virus, Spyware Terminator as your anti-spyware and Comodo/ZoneAlarm as your firewall. All of them are free, and mix together to give a far better protection than Norton. I have this configuration on my PC, and it has not showed any complications ever since. But you have to note one thing, don't activate the anti-virus that comes embedded with Spyware Terminator(ClamAV), or it will conflict with AVG.
ZoneAlarm: http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download/CPF_Setup_2.0.0.1.exe
Spyware Terminator: http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Here are some security tips you may follow:
1.Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall. There is a good possibility that they will fight each other. However, you can use as many anti-spywares as you wish.
2.Always keep the real time scanning/resident shield of your anti-virus and any one of your anti-spyware active, especially while downloading something from file sharing networks.
3.Keep all your security software updated, and scan your computer for spyware every 1 week and for viruses every 2 weeks
Good Luck and Happy New Year!!

AVG has a free version of their popular anti-virus. But there is also a "premium" or "pro" (commercial) version with more features and host of options, including tech support, and you got to pay a license fee and purchase that edition. To dowload the free edition, visit: http://free.grisoft.com/

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:
