so much less violent now than they used to be - why are there less references to religion?

do they think children these days can't cope with it?

why has writing become more simplified in
modern day fairy tales compared for example to grimm's fairy tales.

Fairy tales reflect the culture of their times. Current belief is that young children should not be exposed to the graphic nature of the early fairy tales. So they have all been sanitized (or maybe Disneyfied is a better term). I suspect fairy tales are now pitched to very young children and that is why they have been simplified. The Grimm brothers wrote to a wider audience than three-year-olds. Their books were meant to be serious explorations of folklore.

Old fairy tales are from the medeival times wen violence was common and religion was an everyday practice. These days most of us try to shield our children from violence and teach them about the diversity in religipn. It's not that they can't handle it, it's that they shouldn't.
