You are right. The standard of spelling in many questions and answers is pretty poor. There are many other examples where people use there instead of they're and loose instead of lose is another one. Spellcheck is always available for incorrect spellings but unfortunately incorrect grammar is not included. Perhaps the standards of teaching are not as good as they used to be or possibly younger people do not put as much store into using correct English as they should.

Seriously though...... there is such a DIVERSE group here!!!
I think there are many folks from other countries (that are quite educated in their own language) however ...English is SOoo difficult!
.(.there are so many choices... and rules to follow, and words that break the rules and words that sound alike and yet have different meaning and spelling.......Let's look at three words that ALL have "oo" :

BOOK
TOOTH (or how about loose) lol!
BLOOD

Try to spell THOSE words by looking them up in your translation dictionary !
Also...we probably have a few folks that had other things to do besides pay attention in spelling...
or how bout them fokes that jes like to spell rong and th dis son try so much? LOL!

Happy New Year!!!! (to all my tight and my loose friends!!!)

Probably because the spelling 'loser" makes very little phonetic sense! "Loser" LOOKS likes it ought to rhyme with "dozer" or "poser" (cf. "chosen", etc.)

The u/"oo" -sound is typically spelled with "u(e)", "oo" ['choose'] , "ou" ['through'] or "ew" ['brew']. How often is it spelled with just ONE "o" ?

But oddly, in this case the double o is used to indicate a following /s/ sound, the single o a /z/ sound! How odd is that?!

In this case, I suspect a lot of people are just typing quickly and not thinking too much about it... and so they automatically apply the 'general rule' of "oo" for this sound, even if, stopping to think about it, they know the difference.

"Cuz their loosers!"

It's not just on Yahoo Answers. When I grade papers and tests, that's a common thing. Spelling across the board is pretty lousy. Part of the problem is a de-emphasis on spelling in American schools. Part of it is the use of spell-check which allows it as a legitimate word. But it is really annoying, that's for sure.
