Wireless routers, first of all, do NOT cost $400. Maybe $80. Check Best Buy. If you get a wireless router, you will need to also buy a wireless Network Card for the laptop (unless it came wireless enabled). Remeber, that if you go wireless, you have to secure your connection (through the router interface) or anyone can stop in front of your home and hop on your connection.

That being said, to access files from one computer on another:
First, you will need to buy a router and hook it up (you have to be using broadband, you can't network on dialup). You may want to go somewhere and purchase the networking installation if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. Second, you have to put both machines on a workgroup. To do this:

Open your Contral Panel and click the Network set up wizard (windows XP). Following the prompts on the screen. Do this on your primary machine and tell it that "This computer connects directly...". Leave the default name and description at the next screen. Name your Workgroup. Make sure you select to turn on file sharing. Next, go through the same wizard, choosing "this machine connects through another machine" for the second machine. Put it in the same workgroup and enable file sharing.

Now you will need to share drives and folders. Do so by right clicking on the drive or folder, selecting Properties, then the sharing tab. Select the box to share on the network and select if you would like to be able to change files on that machine from the other machine.

Now you can go to my Network places and the shared items should appear (will say the computer name they are shared from). If they do not appear, select View Workgroup Computers from the left (Windows XP in Classic mode) and find the computer name and when you click that the shares should be listed. Once you access them they will be listed in My Network Places.

You can network both computers. I have linked my desktop and laptop by wireless which works well. A wireless router will cost around US$400 and is well worth the money.
