would i need a router if my computer has a built in lan antenna?

You haven't said for what. To connect to your ISP, you probably do. To connect to a WiFi source, like the ones in the coffee shops, you probably don't.

If youu want to use that wireless connection at home you will need an access point. It is possible to buy an access point that doesn't have a router.
