Catnip is a plant from the mint family. Sounds like Grisham spelt it wrongly.

Maybe that's a colloquial spelling of catnip. Catnip is a plant, the leaves of which, when dried and chopped like spice, i.e. oregano, can be eaten by cats, given them a euphoric, slightly manic feeling. This can be highly entertaining for cat owners. The cats go wild, but not in a bad way. You should have a camcorder ready.

Catnip or Nepeta is a pretty blue flowered hardy perennial garden plant. Cats love it and will sometime eat it. It seems to have a mildly intoxicating effect on them. Not sure about "Catsnip", though. Pehaps one of our American friends has heard of it.

My mate has 2 cats & gave them some Catsnip. Its some sort of plant/herb that they eat. It seems to have the same effect as being "stoned". His cats spent the next few hours in deep sleep or slowly moving around......but they love it!!!

there's a CatSnip project in Atlanta for spaying and neutering, kind of hard to know what context he was referring to the word.
