Use "Add and Remove programs" in your Control Panel to remove Norton; you must uninstall anything there is to do with Norton prior to installing AVG. This includes anything in the control panel that also is listed as "Symantec" which means the updates for Norton. Once completing this task; install AVG; and be sure after installation of AVG is complete; be sure to get the updates. I would suggest to download the AVG version prior to removing Norton, etc. especially if you are on dial up as it takes a longer period of time for the download which means you are at risk while downloading so download avg first. You didn't say whether or not you are installing the free version or the paid version of AVG; they now have a free spam tool to download.
I have removed Norton and installed AVG on computers and no viruses or worms to report while accomplishing this task. Read AVG's web page for a lot of helpful information. Also register your version there also especially if it is the free version.

First why would you want to remove Norton Symantec from your computer ?
for "AVG" I am told can discover viruses on your computer but at times is not strong enough to remove the infections, also not only does Norton blocks viruses like spyware, adware, dailers, joke programs, remote access, hack tools, trackware, unwanted email, spam, and stops your email address from being used by fraudsters and a lot more, can AVG do all that ?
but then avg is free so don't expect it to be as good as Norton Symantec for if it was then Norton would go out of business very quick,
its your choice if you decide to uninstall Norton, but then if it was me I would'nt.
and no you wont be at risk for the short time of being unprotected.
oh well good luck and safe computing.

Norton can be a b*gger to remove sucessfully. Thankfully, even Symatec acknowledge this, so go to :http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

As soon as you've got AVG installed & running, update it online and have it carry out a full scan - that'll bowl out anything that's sneaked in.

And, contrary to rumours, free AVG is not being withdrawn, they're just changing the version and will contact you when necessary.

Hope that helps!

First, you have to get Norton off. That's hard. If you go to:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2001090510510636

You can find help on removing it. To install AVG just start the setup and watch the blinking lights.
