You know, I think the more we progress (technology, news media, internet) the more we regress as human beings. I think with all the special effects and big budget animation and all, we forget the human element in movies. I never saw E.T., but always heard it was good. That was even about 20 years ago. One person I was always fond of and watched most of his movies is Clint Eastwood. In recent years he's really really gone to the human heart with the movies he's directed. If you want two tear jerkers that will leave you thinking somebody REALLY can make a good movie....see "A Perfect World" and "Million Dollar Baby". Low budget, no bells and whistle high tech b.s., just simple story telling that has you thinking throughout. The Wizard of Oz is liked so well over so many generations because it touches the heart. "Crash", last years Oscar winner for best picture was very well done, using the human elements to tell multiple stories in one. Another I never saw, but understand is awesome is Titanic. Or another favorite, pretty old now, is Demi Moore in Ghost. There are classics out there, thing is with 121 channels and cable TV "we" as a society can no longer get it to the level of a Wizard of Oz because of all the choices. We're surfing the web looking at porn and trying to find that next hot deal on Ebay or the next wife.

Usually a classic has to stand the test of time before one knows if it's a classic or not. Wizard was considered a flop at the time. That said, "Field of Dreams" is considered by many to be a modern classic-- I'm assuming from your example that you're asking about a fantasy. Look at how "If you build it, they will come" has become an instantly recognizable line, even used in ads with no explanation. "The Sixth Sense" is another.
If you mean a movie from the past couple of years or so, maybe "The Polar Express." "Lord of the Rings" is an obvious example but it's actually three movies and because of its length I don't think it'll have the same stature-- some people just don't want to invest that much time in one movie, even a great movie. Same for "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"--it's going to be a multi-part film, and "The Golden Compass," now filming.

The Wizard of Oz was an amazing movie of its time because of the special effects. There are a few movies these days, but nothing will ever scratch up to Wizard of Oz. I think some amazing movies which may come close include Jurasic Park and finding nemo. There are many others with great story lines, but nothing will ever break good old Wizard of Oz.

Not that I can think of. Most the crap that's out nowadays are remakes of older crappy movies and now they are just new crappy movies. Hollywood is sad. No one seems to be original. I'm glad Darren Aronofsky is still making films, The Fountain was another of his masterpieces. Lord of the Rings would be up there I think couple years old, but pretty good and definitely original. Other that those nothing has really stuck out to me. Like I said they just keep doing remakes Hollywood seems to be mainly filled with mindless drones who can't come up with any original ideas.
