The box can be anything with a childs wonderful imagination better than the gift inside so it seems.
Do you think it would be a fun idea to actually sell a box, (within a box of course) then the kids would get what they want, cool.

I guess because it allows children to expand their imagination and be active with it. It also inspires adventure. I remember when I was a kid I got a childrens chair for christmas when I was either four or five. I took out the chair and climbed into the box and was more interested in playing in the box and my parents even laughed saying I cared more about the box it came in then the bright yellow chair.

Children love to use their imagination. Most toys do not allow for that, these days. But the box does.

children that would rather play with the box than the toy have not yet had their brains highjacked by commercials and marketing. they are looking for what is actually the most fun, not what is "supposed" to be fun.
they are not concerned with "new and improved" or any of those other marketing buzzwords that are used to brainwash adults into thinking something is more desirable or enjoyable...little kids just take what comes to hand and make the most of it.
either that, or they just want to push their parents' blood pressure up a few notches by leaving an expensive plaything lay, while they amuse themselves with the container it came in...LOL they don't understand that mom or dad spent waaayyy too much money on something, and fought viciously in the aisles of a store to bring home something to "wow" them...

coz a box could have so much more uses than the toy itself.
you can hide in the box and use it for pretty much any structure.
meanwhile the toy may do a couple things, sooner or later they get bored and ends up on the top of the stairs waiting for you to step on it.

Because with children's imagination a box can become anything.houses, cars, castles, dens, hideouts, I recently bought a new refrigerator,it came in a very large box, when my niece and nephew came over..(their 5 and 6 years old), I helped them to cut some windows and a door and they decorated it to make a house, they spent the hole day playing in it,reading stories to their Teddie's having tea parties,drawing,reading,..they even ate their lunch in it,so where as toys do have there place in children's play, children need other materials to stimulate them cardboard boxes being one.

The toy is what the parent sees -- complete and stable and rooted in the adult world. The child sees the infinite possiblities of the seemingly empty box.

It's called 'Murphy's Law', or 'That's Kids'. A toy only has so many uses, but a box can be anything to a child. and they had all that bright and shiny paper all over it. I think they associate the pretty box with fun and play so they stick with it.

The box always gets thrown away so they better get in there quick, the toy will be there later.
however i never grew out of getting in boxes and nor did my sister....my dad bought a new telly and we both couldn't resist seeing if we could fit in the box!
