What do you think about Robert Fisk's article : "...In the aftermath of the international crimes against humanity of 2001 we have tortured, we have murdered, we have brutalised and killed the innocent - we have even added our shame at Abu Ghraib to Saddam's shame at Abu Ghraib - and yet we are supposed to forget these terrible crimes as we applaud the swinging corpse of the dictator we created..."

Such is the nature of states' subjects perception of other states. States require legitimacy to survive and they get that through a combination of indoctrination, coersion, cronyism, transparency and/or widespread civic apathy.
This is not a trait peculiar to the US, every state uses these to sustain itself.

I don't know many people, American or otherwise who are celebrating Saddam's death... the bell still tolls....

Thank you for the link, I've passed it on to others. I think he hit the "nail on the head".
"Those who live by the sword will die by the sword." He should have been sentenced tolife in prison.
Executing him keeps the "violence cycle" alive and well. It will also make a martyr of him.
With the hatred that the allies have brought on themselves by the treatment of prisoners( e.g. Guantanimo & other torture spots around the world), his death will become a rallying point for all the "would be suicide bombers" & other militant factions that are opposed to the intervention in Iraq.
Univ. Of Maryland poll showed 71% of Iraqies want the US out & 61% felt it was the right thing to do, to kill Americans.
That country is destined for Civil War, 3000 Americans have been sacrificed already. How many more must die before the American people say,"ENOUGH" .
For the record, I'm opposed to the "Death Penalty." If for no other reason, it lowers the executioner to the level of the executed.
There are many other reasons, but in this case , I think the ones stated should surfice.

Well if you get your information from The Independent, you must be right.

I'd rather trust Viz than those imbeciles.

We didn't create anything. He got into government himself, fashioned his own dictatorship himself. Everyone takes sides (unless you're Austria or Sweden). Iran at the time was a threat when the Shah was ousted and that nutcase Khomeini (who advocates sex with young boys and animals) installed himself. Saddam invaded Iran, no-one else. And Kuwait. No-one made him do it.

IT WAS MORE BARBARIC TO EXECUTE SADDAM THE WAY HE WAS. he was abused at the gallows, as per the latest footage via mobile phone camera. US always wanted to devour IRAQ and that was not possible till Saddam was in power. It was disgusting to hang a person who just defended and destroyed the guerillas, who wanted to kill him by attacking his convoy in 1982. WHAT US IS NOW TRYING TO DO WITH OSAMA, was the same thing Saddam done with his attackers. AND MOREOVER, if Saddam was deemed to be guilty, he should have been tried in an international court of justice. What the hell US Judges were doing in Iraq. It was the same thing when judges were used by the British in India before indian independance, to eliminate Indian Leaders by hook or by crook...

War is war and these kinds of things have happened in every war that has ever been fought, in fact probably worse. The people who did what they did at Abu Ghraib have been punished and they didn't do half of what Saddam did. Saddam is dead he got his punishment end of story.

Its a way of guiding the world perhaps it starts with good intention and then dictators take power into their own hands and kill and murder all that satnd in their way. I think terriblle things happen everyday but you cant blame America for all of it. Robert should have gone to a priest firstly if he wants to confess about the worlds sins.

He should of suffered in jail with a life sentence. I really don't understand why people r enjoying and wanting to watch his death. Rotting in jail would have been a worse fate and caused less controversy

"americanwerewolf" said it great!

America...first one everyone wants to run to when there is a problem or need money and the first one to get blamed when it doesn't go like they want.

I don't think anything about it should be applauded....I think the only ones applauding are the extreme morose.
