research the character as if it was a real person....my favorite example of research is before Glenn Close took the role in "Fatal Attraction" she visited with four different psychiatrists to examine the background of a woman who was actually like the character...in this way she claims to have felt more at home with the character's motivations and she learned the reasons the character acted & became the way she did..........

research !
first read the book the play / movie is based on. That way you can see the original concept the character plays in the whole story
next read the script, and see how the character is adapted to the stage / screen
some directors are easier to talk to than others. some have very concrete ideas about the role
study or visit places where similar characters may frequent
When you have the personality the way you like it, don't appologies for it. Just keep in character
Read up on some great character acters - Nicole Kidman; Meryl Streep; Dustin Hoffman.

Uta Hagen's "Respect for Acting" or "Challenge for the Actor" were the basic texts when I was in college as a theatre major. Follow her exercises as best as you can (without the benefit of someone trained to critique your progress).
Also, try this website if you don't have the books.

Here's some advice. Research your character. Pirate? Look up online what pirates do and how they act. Sloth? See how sloths act. Just research the environment, situation, and character you are. Be the character don't just be someone who is playing the character.
OH, and super good luck man!!!!!!

focus, and actually feel the emotions, so your projection of the character will have a true feel.
