Reading the newspapers, it seems that the left is no longer in freedom to defend oneself or freedom of commerce. It seems the right has abandoned innocent until proven guilty and has embraced torture.
It seems like everyone is so scared, they'd rather have security than freedom. Like no one believes in all ten ammendments to the constitution anymore.
Is this true? Or is the press lying?

I said before it seemed like both the left and right abandoned the founding freedoms. I say seemed because I don't know who to believe. Thank you for the informative answers so far.

THere are those of us who continue to fight to preserve our freedoms and will do so to the death. The current administration is trying to take our freedoms away and we will not tolerate it. That is why we now have control of congress. Not all of us will blindly follow a leader because of his scare tactics.

I am curious? I cannot find one person that can actually tell me what freedoms we have lost here in America. I asked this question once on Answers and all I got was people calling me names, but not one answer. In WWII we put people in interment camps we did not trust because of their ethinicity, Americans. We do not do that. During WWII and Korea we had a draft. We no longer have that. During Vietnam we had a draft and if you were a war protester the FBI put you on a watch list and tapped your phones with no questions asked. Now it is questioned.
You say we torture people. Compare what little torture we do to the Taliban, Al-Qaida, and Islamic Militias. Complain about them. I have seen college frats do worse torture during pledge week than our Military does now.
We still have the right to due process under he law, a jury trial if accused and the burden of proof is still on the prosecution, if you are American. If your not you are NOT entitled to the same rights as an American. In WWII and other wars people caught fighting not wearing a uniform were shot or hung right then and right there. Not put is some camp in the Carribean, given 3 square meals a day, a prayer mat, a Koran, and free medical care. The press is lying, and they just talked to Democratic Senator on the news yesterday returning from a visit in Iraq. He stated the biggest complaint from the soldiers was how bad the press was lying about the war. Americans have lost their backbone maybe, but they have lost no rights at all. If you think you have tell me which ones. Email me, my email address in on Answers

It's like freedoms are craftily being restructured since 9/11/ No matter what keep eye on any changes or proposals and if they're cutting freedom for safety sake pick the freedom.

It is true but there is hope. Most Americans are middle of the road, politically. And they have sensed the Royal aspirations of the Bushies. Hence, the election results. We are somewhat apathetic and naive but not stupid. And I think and hope that we will rise to the occassion. We did so after the MacCarthy era too. And we will again. The Bill of Rights (first ten amendments) is too precious an endowment to piss away to the arrogance and ignorance or the "axis os error"

It seems sometimes that things are going that way.
Those who would sacrifice freedom for security will have neither.
Those who would try to silence the opinions of others are much more dangerous to this great country than any terrorist.

For the most part, yes. The old Libertarian saying is that the left wants government to be like your mother and the right wants government to be like your father. Either way, they both want government to act like your parent.

it relatively is an ongoing victory and it is been ongoing for extremely a on an identical time as. we've already lost maximum of freedoms interior the U. S. because of the fact of 9/11 and maximum of persons have generic this loss interior the call of "risk-free practices". I nevertheless bear in mind the interview with Gen. Tommy Franks (who I had the respect and privilege of serving under quickly) back in 2003 the place he referred to the Patriot Act became effectively stripping all human beings of many rights we've continually had interior the call of risk-free practices. in spite of the undeniable fact that, that wasn't his best concern. His best concern became a 2d mass casualty experience on US soil. He became very particular the form might as we talk be discarded in want of a militia government to massive applause of the two the ignorant plenty and the terrorists if that would desire to ensue. He wasn't the only one with that concern and besides the undeniable fact that it style of feels quite paranoid in case you particularly seem at each and every thing it is got here approximately interior the final decade you could it seems that see how loads of our protections and rights have been eroded. no longer in basic terms is it an ongoing victory for Al Queda and others like them as quickly as we discard the values this united states became based to foster and look after and instill in each and each of its voters, people who help discard those values or willfully and knowingly do each and every thing of their potential to eliminate those rights and protections from others are not any extra helpful than the terrorists. i in my opinion view them as much extra risky in some techniques, certainty learn. I have no subject calling human beings like that "traitors" to the spirit on which this united states became based.

George W. Bush has abandoned our founding principles; however, the American people have only been blind-sided by this fact. In time, as we see now, we are reclaiming our principles slowly.

It seemed to be going that way. I think that's stopping with the shift in power after the elections. That's what we get when the american version of the Taliban is in charge. Makes you sick doesn't it? Big lesson about religious extremism for the planet here.
