i have broadband, so why do i need to pay a host? my broadband traffic is unlimited, so how do i turn my pc into a server, and why dont people do this? i have several pc's, so tying one up just for this purpose wouldnt be a problem.

i have a cable connection (ntl) and i believe, a fixed ip address, if this helps?
I'm not planning a major site, and do have ntl webspace, im just interested Why it seems you have to pay, when the theory of the net is its free (once youve got a connection).

You can. You just have to research it. And, by the way, registering a name directly with nominet is far more expensive than registering through an agent.
Adding to what I wrote earlier you can have a free site and your ISP almost certainly provides web space. If you want your own domain name you have to pay to register it. It takes manpower to administer net names and you'll need two name servers. Are people just supposed to provide this for the love of it? Now some ISPs will host your site with your own domain name for you: just shop around. The original concept of the net may have been free sharing of information but that hasn't been the case for a very long time. It's just not practical to have anyone hooking up to it when they feel like it. the technically inept could cause congestion and damage.

I would check the contract with your broadband provider first. Some prohibit this specifically, because they offer services like this for an extra fee. Also, the upload speed is usually much slower than your download speed and that is not so good if you have a server with a site for people to visit. Also the IP address of your connection to the Internet changes frequently. Providers often "reset" and force a new IP address to your connection on purpose. DSL providers for example offer a "static IP" for an extra charge. People will not be able to find your server again, if the address changes.
There are ways around this problem, but it gets more complicated. It also does not help with the problem of the lower upload speed.

You could install Microsoft's IIS from Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel. Then move your HTML code into the directory C:\Inetpub\wwwroot. Open your internet browser and type http://localhost/
But that's a very simple and not very functional solution. As Carsten C answered before, there are many problems and you need some expertise on computers and the world wide web to create a fully productive web server. Maybe you should search wikipedia, Microsoft's MSDN pages. Apache.org Documentation, or even better buy a book to get you started rather than rely on Yahoo! Answers. It's a much more complicated subject that can't be solved with a single answer.

There is no reason why you can't
the issue is that you dont have a fixed IP address of your own.. you need that to run a website of your own. some ISP's will allocate a fixed IPO address.
there is another issue in as much as your broadband connection is restricted.. the upload speed is around 10% of the downlaod speed. and the speed overall is determined by traffic on adjacent ADSl users. there is only so much band width available in any one block of ADSL connections in a single telephone exchange.
so yes you can host your own website on your own PC over ADSL but you will need a fixed IP Address.
you will need a server... not a problem, you can use Apache on Windows and or Linux, you can use whatever scritping and database you need (again nto a problem with PHP, Ruby, PErl and the like) but could be a problem if you want to use ASP, ASp.NEt, IIS etc.... they all cost)
but why woudl you want to?
there are plenty of free webspace providers out there.. there was a sort of similar question a few mninutes ago.. and to my amazement I found this really nifty web page called google.. it suggested that there were over 2.1 million hits for free webspace.. try one.
the advantages.
your a adsl connection isnt being hogged by requests
any security propblems are not yours to sort out
there are no risks of security breaches affecting your network at home. so no trojans, virsues etc are going to sneak through your firewall
you dont have to concern yourself if the telecoms link gets killed
it isnt your badnwidth allcoation that is being consumed on your own website
you dont have to expert in operating systrems, databases, servers, security etc.

Download WAMP which is a server then google around as you need to open the servers files to program it with the domain name etc. NOTE 1> This is quite complicated 2> Your risking your own computer professional hosting companies have better security 3> Your website will only be accessable while your laptop is on after you shut it down you shut your site dow.

um.. due to a few reason i guess!
have u set up the IIS Server on Windows XP? Use the Add/Remove programs option to install that using the WinXP cd.
after u set up ur local server, you need to make sure u actually HAVE permission from ur broadband provider to do that!
make sure u have a STATIC IP address and not a dynamic ip. static ip address remains same and dynamic changes. ip addresses act as your website address. you can get a domain name to 'mask' that ip address.
and that's that! you're done!
