Rush, Hannity, Beck, O'Rielly, etc are entertainers who are good at making money by marketing their own particular product. Good for them. The troublesome part of all this is that people actually take them seriously. What can be done to educate the public that these folks are only entertainers and should be viewed as such?

Most of them will never understand that. These people are like the cheerleaders for the republican party, they act like spoiled little girls, won't let anyone get a word in edgewise and defend defend defend those who are not worth defending. Just like cheerleaders, they keep cheering even when their team is losing. "And now your chance to own the new book, coffee mug, etc that I'm offering my listeners for only some ridiculous price"

It is no different than people getting their political beliefs from actors and entertainers. For some reason, celebrity status seems to somehow add validity to someones ideological views. Susan Surandon, George Clooney, Tim Roberts, Julia Roberts, Robin Williams all speak out politically. They are actors. I have a B.A. in Political Science. I once pointed out the problems with something political that Clooney had to say. I was basically asked how could I disagree with Clooney, because, well he is George Clooney.

There was talk of Tim McGraw running for Gov of Tenn. Everyone i heard thought he would make a great Gov. My question was what makes him qualified. What is his education? Does he really know anything about politics, governing, or anything of the sort. People didn't seem concerned by it because, well, he is Tim McGraw, or course he is qualified.

It's all about the money, why would you want to educate people that you are a snake oil salesman? When it's really broken down to the root, isn't the republican party about how much money can I get and hold onto? They talk a bunch of stuff, but money is the end game and it always will be.

Well, Jon, I agree with you totally. The question might be more like what is the general intelligence level of the viewers that think people like Rush, Hannity, etc. are some sort of quality reporting?

You've heard the phrase,"the dumbing down of America?"

It has absolutely nothing to do with politics; it is neither a "liberal" phenomenon nor a "conservative" one.

Stupidity and gullibility are like diseases; they affect all people.

It's one thing to have intelligent, mature differences of opinion and discuss/debate them in a controlled situation (as opposed to dung flinging); it's quite another to be the kind of person that prefers to see things in their simplest form, reduced to "either-or" and "black & white."

Back when I was in college (early 70s), I had this English professor that I thought was a total SOB. I thought he was just brutal on my compositions. They literally bled with red ink.

He was trying to teach me the proper rules of logic, mechanics, style, etc.

After I graduated with honors, I was grateful for the tutoring he gave me. But while it was happening, he often made reference to the fact that people seemed to be attracted more to the "fluff" of mass media then the real "meat."

On TV, someone like O'Reilly is (in his perverse way) more "entertaining" than a REAL journalist like Andy Rooney, who got his start writing for the "Stars and Stripes" in WWll. He’s won three Emmy Awards for his essays, which now number more than 800.

Many people will be more attracted by the "clowns" of society than the serious writers.

O'Rielly, admitted his stuff was a big joke on the letterman show.
I hear what your saying, I have a friend that is a conservative, and he actually thinks that soaps on TV are real life, and uses the plots in his real life daily routines.......its a crazy world

What is troublesome is people like you that have a bias towards liberal thinking. I am sure that O'Reilly and Hannity and others have their own bias, but to condemn them only shows where you stand. There is always supposed to be opposing views. To be blind in your thinking that they are always on the wrong side shows that you are not a open minded person.

closed minds seldom awaken on their own accord, unfrtunately there is more money to be made keping the mindless in the state of belief than by awakening them to the truth until oneday they realize freedom has vanished
