I would say diesel as it is a more robust engine but you have to have higher capacity to breach the performance of the petrol engine. The are pro's and con's to boh engines. At the end of the day you must study the statistics and choose for yourself.

generally speaking diesels outlast petrol engines
diesels are usually cheaper to run than petrol, so the savings on a high mileage are significant.
diesels are generall more reliable than petrol... yes they rely on glow plugs to get started, but after that there is no complex ignition system prone to faults or dampness
petrol engined cars tend to be more resopnsive and slightly faster than diesel, although the gap is closing
because diesel car engines tend to use turbo chargers when they go wrong they can be horrendously expensive to repair

if you are buying a car from new and planning to do a high mileage.. its a no brainer in my view: go Diesel.

if you are buying a high milegae car then it depends more how the cars has been handled, a well maintained, serviced car that has been well looked after is going to last longer than a car that is poorly maintained, thrashed or used to maximum capacity towing stuff or whatever.

To realise how a diesel works put your finger over the end of a cycle pump & feel how hot it gets . Diesel is more volatile than petrol & has higher compression ratios so when you compress it it burns or explodes. Petrol is not as good so requires a spark ti start burning process

as u've not asked which is better 4 good mileage, u've asked which is better 4 high mileage vehicles so i would say "petrol" is better than that of diesel".
as far as the good performance is concern petrol engine will make u smile even after 5 years.

Diesel, but they do need servicing more regularly, and diesel is more expensive so you have to do a trade off do you want to rattle like a tractor and belch out black smoke all the time or run a petrol and save the money from cheaper running costs to spend on maintenance.

while i hate diesels, i will say if you are doing high miles diesels are better. if you can buy one of the new 1.3 or 1.6 diesels the 1.3 will do about 80mpg an still have a decent bit of torque. do not buy the 1.4 polo petrol or diesel

I would say turbo-diesal, but you failed to say if it was around town mileage or motor way mileage thet latter i assume, then i would say go for the dieasal, especially if you buy a car that can take bio-diesal ( re-cycled chip fat ).
